EcIA Projects

North Harlow
Client: BP Pension Fund Ropemaker Properties Ltd
Proposals for a large-scale sustainable urban extension to Harlow have been put forward as part of the East of England Plan. EPR’s involvement has included large scale and extensive ecological surveying over a site area of 1500ha, and key inputs into the master-planning and urban design process providing advice on the development of ecologically sensitive proposals.

Radlett Airfield
Client: HelioSlough Limited
Proposals for a rail freight terminal on a 120 ha restored gravel workings site near St. Albans in Hertfordshire; previously the Handley Page aircraft works airfield. This has included extensive ecological surveys to provide baseline information for an Ecological Impact Assessment including bird surveys on other land holdings of the land owner (Lafarge) in the local area in order to identify potential sites which can provide ecological mitigation/compensation for breeding and wintering birds. EPR prepared the ecological chapter for the Environmental Statement, and produced evidence for Public Inquiry.

A38 Dobwalls Bypass
Client: Highways Agency
The A38 Dobwalls Bypass incorporates a 4km section of road between Dobwalls and Liskeard, Cornwall. EPR prepared the Ecological Impact Assessment and presented evidence at the Public Inquiry, having successfully overcome objections from English Nature. Significant input into the detailed design stage has resulted in some innovative designs for bat mitigation involving a series of “bat crossings” to mitigate against the potential severance of bat flight routes. EPR successfully obtained European Protected Species licences for both bats and dormouse and have played an integral role in the implementation of this highways project.

Land at Kingston Isle of Wight
Client: Barratt Southampton
EPR undertook ecological surveys, prepared the Ecological Impact Assessment, and successfully negotiated a mitigation strategy with Natural England and the Isle of Wight Council to help secure a consent for a housing and light industrial scheme adjacent to a European nature conservation designation Solent & Southampton Water SPA. Potential effects on the SPA have been overcome by successfully negotiating a package of mitigation measures designed to minimise the effects of the scheme on the wintering birds that use the adjacent foreshore.

London Road, Purfleet
Client: Wimpey Homes
The ecological survey and preparation of Environmental Statement for a major “Thames Gateway” housing scheme on the banks of the River Thames identified an interesting invertebrate assemblage often associated with such brownfield sites. EPR has subsequently been involved in negotiations with Natural England, and Buglife regarding mitigation and compensation measures for effects on the invertebrate assemblage.

Blackwood Forest
Client: Forest Holidays
Proposals for a development of forest holiday lodges and a central leisure facility within woodland near Micheldever, Hampshire.  EPR is currently carrying out extensive ecological surveys to provide baseline information for an Ecological Impact Assessment. This will include development of a mitigation/compensation strategy to minimize potential effects of the scheme on the woodland and its wildlife.

Shinfield, Reading
Clients: Consortium of University of Reading, Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson Homes
Proposals for 3000 housing units and a relief road at Shinfield, Spencers Wood & Three Mile Cross, just south of M4 at Reading. The site covers an area in excess of 600 hectares and the project involves extensive ecological surveying to provide baseline information for an Ecological Impact Assessment, together with an assessment of the potential effects on the Thames Basin Heaths SPA.

Bexhill to Hastings Link Road
Client: East Sussex County Council
Contract for pre construction survey and development of the mitigation design of the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road, a proposed 5.6km wide 2 lane single carriageway.  Species involved include dormouse, bats, badgers and great crested newts.
