Ecological Surveys

Ecological Surveys

Good quality ecological advice must be based on good quality and robust ecological survey information. Highly professional survey work:

  • Underpins the ecological validity of any project Prevents project delays resulting from requests for further information from Local Planning Authorities or Statutory Agencies
  • Provides confidence to key players such as Natural England, so that time is not wasted in lengthy discussions about data, but rather spent negotiating and agreeing the real issues at hand
  • Provides the information needed to design and implement effective mitigation and enhancement strategies

EPR’s experienced staff will ensure that we provide you with the highest quality survey information, the bedrock of our advice. We are able to provide all the national habitat survey techniques, including Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, Phase 2 Vegetation surveys, River Corridor and other aquatic surveys, and our experience covers all protected species. This expertise enables us to provide an unrivalled service to both development and conservation clients. Our approach to survey is usually a staged one; first, a preliminary Ecological Appraisal Survey to establish the potential ecological issues and then if necessary more detailed surveys at the appropriate time of year.

Survey Planning
Ecological surveys are seasonal and whilst most cannot be undertaken in the winter, habitat assessments for potential are possible and some limited ecological information can be gathered. Nevertheless, survey seasons should be factored into project programmes at an early stage to prevent unnecessary and costly delays because of seasonal constraints. Different species and groups are best surveyed at different times of year (Download survey timetable).
